Physical Evidence
Shape, construction, dimensions, materials, surface details, condition, and other observable characteristics.
RESEARCH & DOCUMENTATION
A research approach built around observation, documented sources, careful comparison, and transparency about what is known and what remains uncertain.
THE RESEARCH APPROACH
Research at Finicky Bee begins with the object itself. Physical characteristics, construction, materials, marks, labels, condition, and other observable details provide the starting point.
From there, available evidence is examined alongside documented sources, maker information, historical references, and comparable examples when appropriate.
The purpose is not simply to arrive at a name or date. It is to build a documented understanding of what the available evidence can reasonably support.
WHAT WE EXAMINE
Shape, construction, dimensions, materials, surface details, condition, and other observable characteristics.
Signatures, maker's marks, manufacturer's marks, labels, stamps, inscriptions, and other identifying details.
Books, catalogs, historical records, manufacturer information, institutional resources, and other relevant references.
Comparable examples may help establish patterns in design, construction, materials, markings, or production.
Historical, cultural, geographic, manufacturing, and collecting context can help explain where an object fits within its story.
EVIDENCE BEFORE ASSUMPTION
Research sometimes produces a clear identification. Other times, the available evidence supports only a broader conclusion.
Finicky Bee distinguishes between documented information, observations made directly from an object, reasonable research conclusions, and information that remains uncertain.
When evidence is incomplete or conflicting, that uncertainty is preserved rather than replaced with unsupported certainty.
WHEN THE ANSWER IS UNCERTAIN
Not every collectible comes with a complete history. Marks may be worn away, records may be unavailable, sources may disagree, or an object's original context may have been lost over time.
In those situations, Finicky Bee documents what can be established and clearly identifies what remains unknown or unresolved.
An unanswered question is still useful when it is preserved honestly for future research.
FROM RESEARCH TO RECORD
Research findings, physical observations, photographs, and supporting information can become part of a lasting record connected to the object.
This documentation helps preserve not only what was discovered, but also how that understanding was reached.
Explore the Collection →SEE THE PROCESS IN ACTION
Finicky Bee Finds explores selected objects through discovery, observation, research, documentation, and storytelling.
Explore Finicky Bee Finds →INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
Finicky Bee is an independent collecting and research project. Research is conducted to better understand the objects within the collection and to preserve the information discovered about them.
The work does not replace the expertise of qualified specialists, museums, archives, or other professional institutions when specialized expertise is required.
